The Aims of Maths at Ravenshall
At Ravenshall School we believe that by providing exciting and relevant learning opportunities, all learners can develop to their full mathematical potential. We aim to do this by:
- Promoting enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion.
- Equipping learners with the language and skills to communicate their mathematical ideas.
- Developing an understanding of the importance of Maths in everyday life and how to apply mathematical skills in a meaningful way.
- Improving learners’ ability to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning in a range of contexts.
- Providing appropriate accreditation and opportunities for life beyond school.
In Maths learners are introduced to an idea or a skill by acting it out with practical resources. Once learners have experienced this ‘hands on’ approach, they begin to relate their understanding to diagrams and pictures. This enables learners to then being to represent their ideas using mathematical notation and symbols. Maths is a core subject in the National Curriculum and is delivered as a dedicated subject, but is also an integral part of every lesson which is taught in school.
The foundation of successful Maths learning relies on developing confidence and competence with numbers and the number system. This includes; understanding place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and ratios. It is important that all these concepts are applied in a functional way, for example when using money and measures.
Geometry and Measure
An essential element of Maths is to develop a sense of shape and space. This is includes; developing measuring skills in a range of contexts, understanding the properties of shape and using position and direction. It is important that learners are shown the real life applications of these concept skills, for example when cooking.
A key part of Maths is learning to understand and interpret data in different ways. This includes; sorting, collecting data and creating graphs. In KS4 this also extends to interpreting data in different contexts, for example using a bus timetable.
